God Still Speaks Today
Many have wondered “Does God still speak today?” And I’d say, “YES!” but that raises another question, “How does God speak?” Most Christians would say that He speaks through the Bible, because it is God’s written Word. At first, I would agree with them, but if they took the Bible and said this is everything God will ever say, then I would have to disagree.
Don't misunderstand, I believe that the Bible contains complete truth in its contents, but I am also saying that I believe there are things that God wants to say to you and to the church today. For instance, how is it that sometimes you just know what the Lord wants you to pray? Or how do you just know what decision to make, when you are planning on moving to a new place?
Have you noticed that sometimes when you are praying, that a thought will come to your mind, and you know it is the right thing to say even though you don’t know the full situation. Or when you are planning on moving, you know where you’re supposed to go, and you have complete peace about it. I would say that in both of those instances that it was God speaking to you. But you didn’t find that information in the Bible. God was helping you to know what His will was for your life right now.
Personally, I have found that a lot of times I have given myself way too much credit for “good thoughts” or “good ideas,” I have come to understand that they actually came from God. I think the best way to cultivate your ear to hear God speaking is to thank the Lord for those great ideas or thoughts, instead of patting yourself on the back.
I have found that the more I do this, the more I have been able to recognize the difference between God speaking to me and my own thoughts. He has a voice and the more you choose to hear, the more you will know and recognize Him. Trust me, God won’t judge you if He wasn’t speaking. Actually, the fact that God created our minds, and gave us the ability to think in the first place, means that He is the one who gave us the thoughts and good ideas that we claim are our own.
So, as my Pastor would say, next time you get it in your head to buckle up, thank God. God wants to speak to you, whether or not you want to hear (He is probably already speaking to you), but it is our choice to receive what the Lord is saying to us. In my next post I will share a list of ways to help you discern whether or not your thoughts are from God.
